How to use a travel eSIM, step by step

By RoamRates Editorial · 2026-06-14

In short: To use a travel eSIM: check your phone is eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked, buy a plan for your destination, install the eSIM by scanning the QR code (do this on Wi-Fi before you fly), then on arrival turn on the eSIM line and enable data roaming for that line only. Keep your home SIM for calls and texts and use the eSIM for data.

A travel eSIM is the cheapest, simplest way to get mobile data abroad — no plastic SIM, no airport kiosk. Here is exactly how to use one.

Tip: install your eSIM on Wi-Fi before you fly. Installation needs internet, and you don’t want to be doing it at the arrivals hall.

Step 1: check your phone is compatible

You need an eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked phone. Most iPhones from the XS onward, recent Samsung Galaxy S/Note/Z models and Google Pixel 3+ support eSIM. Dial your settings to confirm, or check the provider’s compatibility page.

Step 2: buy a plan for your destination

Pick a plan sized to your trip. Compare by price-per-GB — bigger plans are cheaper per GB:

Trip data useSuggested plan
Light (maps, chat)1–3 GB
Normal (browsing + some video)5 GB
Heavy (streaming, hotspot)10–20 GB or unlimited

Find the cheapest option for your country in the country comparisons, or model two plans in the price-per-GB calculator.

Step 3: install the eSIM (on Wi-Fi, before you fly)

After purchase the provider sends a QR code. On your phone: open the eSIM/add-plan setting and scan it, or use the provider’s app to install in one tap. The plan is now stored on your phone — it usually does not start counting until you use it abroad.

Step 4: on arrival, switch data to the eSIM

When you land:

  1. Turn on the eSIM line.
  2. Enable data roaming for the eSIM line only.
  3. Set the eSIM as your mobile data line.
  4. Turn off roaming on your home SIM so it isn’t charged.

Your home number still works for calls and texts; data flows through the cheap eSIM.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to remove my normal SIM to use an eSIM?

No. An eSIM is a second line, so you keep your physical SIM for calls and texts and use the eSIM for data. Just set the eSIM as your data line and turn off roaming on your home SIM to avoid charges.

When should I install my travel eSIM?

Install it on Wi-Fi before you fly — installation needs internet. You can usually activate it (start the validity window) either automatically on first connection abroad or manually, depending on the plan.

Why isn't my eSIM connecting on arrival?

Check three things: the eSIM line is turned on, data roaming is enabled for that line, and it is selected as your mobile data line. Toggling airplane mode or restarting the phone usually completes registration.
